Club Meeting 1183 Nov 2008, Graham M

MG TC Owners Club Newsletter

 from Meeting 1183 - 27th November, 2008

(Produced by Graham Mackie)

Meeting 1183 in the Rose  Garden and Porch was a pretty well attended affair and surprisingly started on time!!!.  Why???.  What went wrong. I came late and missed the horn and the preamble and the apologies so I can't help there, except to say that Kevin McM . and John L. were  recorded.

Minutes of Meeting 1183 were read and although confirmed, Graham M. asked why there was no mention of THE JACKET...... in the minutes even tho' it took many hours trying to locate the owner     Pres JB. said that Joyce  had been away and he had purposely ensured that she  had not read the last newsletter. ........ ( squib) Ed.   Just thought it was worth mentioning

Matters Arising .

Crowd Trial. Comments were 'tough going', 'well organised' 'no punch ups' 'no divorces pending'  'eveyone went home happy' ' it was great but we didn't know what it was all about'  'poorly negotiated by competitors'. The finish ( envelopes opened) was at Parkerville at the home of Marcus and Lisa Rawlinson.

Pres JB and Bill J. depended on following ex Pres Col otherwise may never have found the finish. Navigator Bill  thought it was a treasure hunt.  Pres. JB unsure if he will be a navigator next year.

Someone had fun with the roses, tulips and sticks  but found it thorny.

Mike S (organiser) then indicated there was 'good news and bad news'. The good news was that those to hear the bad news had already been told of it. The bad news was there had been a preliminary results stuff up and he was embarrassed and apologised.

The revised results were

Historic Bike Racing @Wanneroo.  Was a great day according to President JB and Secretary Chris. Three TC's, 1 SA and millions of bikes from around Australia. It was described as an overdose of bikes for bike lovers . One enthusiast bought over 12 bikes from Albury. A 77 year old was noted going likkety split on a 90 year old Douglas. Great event, great preparation......  it was agreed

Go – Kart event. In the Sunday event someone, described in unflattering terms got best time, three times. Mike S. then displayed the trophy he was awarded, describing it as the flashest he'd ever been awarded. The Sec. Altho' disappointed  got a trophy for his 5th place..

Correspondence Out.     Bob Detheridge. Letter to Bob  was read by Secretary Chris and was described as 'very well written' It resulted in applause. Apparently Bob has joined the VSCC. Harry P. asked if the rules of Conc. Licensing  had been printed on the rear of the Membership application form. Answer was ' No'.

Vintage Stampede – a VSCC event is on this weekend. Scrutineering from 7am. 130 cars entered .

General Business.         Italian Bike Day is on 7th December at Bentley Technology Centre.

Club Concours to be held 22nd February, '09  and likely to be same location as previously.

Bendigo Swap Meet. Rob G. attended  and estimated 20,000 people there He said that Lucas gear was disappearing – very little left it seemed.  May not go again.

Cad Plating. Rob had an order of 500 pieces completed by the company, Aero Plating . He was extremely satisfied with the result and had huge compliments for an immaculate presentation of the factory and its operators. They do copper, nickel and cadmium plating but not chrome.

Mike S  announced it was 49 years since he bought his TC .       Much applause.

Graham M. announced it was 51 years since he picked a TC to be his first car, from a car yard in Parramatta Road -  Sydney  He tried driving it, with his father, a car buff beside him down Parramatta Road. He battled not only the lousy steering , but the tram tracks and skinny wheels until his father blurted out "turn this bloody car around son, you will kill yourself" to which Graham could but obey. It took another 30 years to get a TD,  after a Sunbeam Rapier , Mini's and two MGBGT's.

Graham A. claimed it was 55 years since he stole his fathers TC.  I think he crashed it?????

Colin D. said it was November '59 (he was just out of Nasho's) that he bought Jack Ayres  TC 8687  for 450 pounds. Four years later he traded it on a Mini Cooper and Robin Knott bought the TC from the dealer a week later. Eighteen months later it was being taken east and and while parked at  a roadhouse it is alleged a semi backed over it.  Seems it was sold on the spot to the roadhouse owner. It seems that the Schappel Brothers from Adelaide heard about it some years later and found it only had a broken diff.  They bought it and the engine is now in one of the brothers 'specials'. The car is apparently back on the road and is being campaigned by Geraldine and Wayne Hough in SA. Colin says it seems it was off the road for 40 years and he must have driven past it many times.

Pres. JB had an experience back in 1965 when the Freeway only reached to Applecross. He was half way down it when the car vibrated shockingly. He checked – car was still going and it was easiest to keep going to home which was in Como. Next morning he took off the head and found three pistons at Top Dead Centre – He had thrown a conrod and other nasties resulted. More of these stories  please.

Mike Flint has given me a written precis of his life involvement  with MG's . More are requested!!!

Next Meeting 11th December at  John L's Chittering Retreat

and the Xmas Party - 13th December
